Former union chief Peter Malinauskas has been promoted to cabinet just weeks after joining South Australia's parliament.

The 35-year-old was selected alongside northern Adelaide MP and fellow Right faction member Leesa Vlahos by the Labor caucus on Monday.

Their promotion follows the resignations of Police Minister Tony Piccolo and Employment Minister Gail Gago, who offered to make way for new blood as Labor eyes a fifth term in office.

Premier Jay Weatherill will now allocate portfolios that will be announced at a swearing in ceremony at Government House on Tuesday.

Mr Malinauskas could be well-placed to take on the employment portfolio after serving as head of the powerful Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association in SA.

His promotion to cabinet comes just weeks after he was elected to fill a casual vacancy in the upper house following the resignation of disgraced MP Bernard Finnigan.

And it's certain to fuel speculation about his leadership ambitions.

The Right powerbroker, who gained notoriety for his role in the ousting of former premier Mike Rann, is strongly tipped to switch to a safe lower house seat at the 2018 state election.

Ms Vlahos, a lower house MP since 2010, was elected unopposed over Left faction member Katrine Hildyard and first-term MP Annabel Digance.

The Right will now have seven out of the party's 12 cabinet positions, with two other spots held by independents.

Deputy Premier John Rau, who holds six portfolios, could relinquish some responsibilities in the reshuffle but any changes are likely to be minor.
