The Liberals have conceded defeat in the South Australian elections, with leader Isobel Redmond admitting her party had failed to topple the Rann Labor government.

Ms Redmond said a final tally of postal votes had confirmed the Liberals had not won enough seats to take control of the state parliament.

"We have been waiting to see what the trend is in seats where we were still holding out some hope, sadly for us... the trends are such that the time has come to concede that we cannot form a government," Ms Redmond said.

"I am here to offer my congratulations to Mike Rann and the Labor team on a successful election campaign.

"It was an interesting experience and a fun ride and I am looking forward to the challenge of the next four years because I intend to get government in 2014," she told reporters outside Parliament House in Adelaide.
