The South Australian opposition has called for a super health portfolio in the wake of the resignation of Health Minister Jack Snelling.

Opposition Leader Steven Marshall is urging the government to consolidate the health, aged care and mental health portfolios under one minister to ensure that health is dealt with in a "coherent fashion".

The call comes after Mr Snelling resigned on Sunday, weeks after the opening of the new $2.4 billion Royal Adelaide Hospital, while Mental Health Minister Leesa Vlahos moved to the backbench.

"Having three ministers responsible for the department of health is a recipe for buck-passing, indecision and policy paralysis," Mr Marshall said on Monday.

"The health portfolio is a complex area and needs one minister at the helm to provide certainty and direction."

The government has come under increasing pressure in the health sector following delays with the opening of the new hospital and a controversial revamp of SA's health services known as Transforming Health.

The Labor caucus on Monday morning elevated Chris Picton and Katrine Hildyard to cabinet.

Premier Jay Weatherill will name his reshuffled ministry at a ceremony at Government House on Monday afternoon.
