They were childhood friends but that didn't stop David Corlett from killing Kane Bogner-Holmes, using a knife to inflict fatal wounds in a drunken brawl.
The pair traded blows at a 21st birthday party in April last year, before Corlett took a knife from the kitchen and pierced his mate's ribs and heart.
He was jailed for life in the South Australian Supreme Court on Wednesday with Justice Anne Bampton imposing an 18-year non-parole period.
Corlett, 31, previously pleaded guilty to murdering Mr Bogner-Holmes, 25, at the party at Port Noarlunga, south of Adelaide.
The court heard the pair had clashed over a threatening insult Corlett made towards a woman.
"Mr Bogner-Holmes heard (the comment) and picked up a pool cue and jumped over the lounge and struck you to twice to your body," Justice Bampton told Corlett.
The pair also fought in the bathroom, where Corlett hit his head on the bath before retrieving a T-handled Allen key.
He punched Mr Bogner-Holmes on the arm and back with the Allen key and then grabbed a knife from the kitchen.
After the stabbing Mr Bogner-Holmes walked to the front door and collapsed outside.
Justice Bampton said Corlett had taken methamphetamines and drunk a large amount of alcohol that night.
The victim's aunty, Philomena Holmes, said she was not ready to forgive Corlett, who she believed came to the party "off his face" and looking for a fight.
Ms Holmes said her nephew was witty and full of life and she wished his mates had stepped in to stop the violence that went on for hours.
"These fights went on all night. I don't understand how it got that out of hand," she said.
