Cabinet minister Christopher Pyne insists he will be standing for a seat in Adelaide's eastern suburbs regardless of changes to federal electorates.

The Australian Electoral Commission believes, based on population changes, South Australia should lose one seat and Victoria and the ACT should gain one seat each - increasing the total number of lower house electorates by one to 151.

"I will definitely have a seat ... what it will end up looking like is a matter for the electoral commission," Mr Pyne, the member for Sturt, told the Nine Network on Friday.

Mr Pyne acknowledged on Sky News a federal election result in SA under a redistribution would be "a lot more up in the air".

But he said the actions of the Weatherill Labor state government were undermining the federal opposition's standing in SA.

Labor senator Kim Carr said Victoria had witnessed a massive growth in population, while Mr Pyne's state of SA had declined.

"You know it's a tragedy that we've seen the destruction of automotive manufacturing industry in South Australia," Senator Carr told ABC radio.

"The Liberal Party has a lot to answer for in that regard."
