SA MPs meet on medicinal cannabis

The South Australian government says people can already get access to medical marijuana in the state despite claims there are legal hurdles.

The South Australian government has rejected claims the state has been slow to allow people access to medical marijuana, saying a pathway is in place.

Cross bench and Liberal MPs held a forum on Friday to hear from consumers, doctors and those in the medicinal cannabis industry amid concerns legal access was still a problem.

Greens MP Tammy Franks said South Australia still had no authorised prescriber of medicinal marijuana.

But Minister for Manufacturing and Innovation Kyam Maher countered that medical specialists could already prescribe the drug and one cancer patient had successfully been approved for access.

"There is already a pathway and we already have a patient who has gone down that pathway," Mr Maher said.

"My message, if anyone thinks this might be something they could benefit from, is to talk to their doctor, see their medical specialist and discuss it with them."

The minister said while the federal government reclassified medicinal cannabis from a schedule 9 to a schedule 8 drug in November, allowing it to be prescribed, South Australian law was already flexible enough to allow it to be prescribed.
