SA nurse rapist, killer appears in court

Dudley Davey will face sentencing submissions in May over the murder of nurse Gayle Woodford in outback SA.

About 20 victim impact statements will be presented to the South Australian Supreme Court when Mimili man Dudley Davey faces sentencing submissions in May over the murder and rape of outback nurse Gayle Woodford.

Davey pleaded guilty to the charges in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court in February, almost a year after Ms Woodford's body was found in a shallow grave at Fregon, in the state's north.

He appeared in the Supreme Court for the first time on Monday, with prosecutor Sandi McDonald telling the Justice Ann Vanstone that five of the 20 statements would be read to the court.

She said a statement on behalf of the Fregon community was also being prepared.

Ms Woodford, 56, had worked in the Fregon community health clinic before she went missing from her home in March 2016.

On the same day an ambulance she used in her work drove from the area and was tracked using its GPS data.

Police intercepted the vehicle hours later at Coober Pedy and arrested Davey inside.

He was originally charged over the theft of the vehicle, with the murder charge added when Ms Woodford's body was found three days later.

In court on Monday, defence counsel Nick Vadasz raised concerns over the lack of a Pitjatjantjara interpreter for his client.

He told the court that he had not been able to get an interpreter for any of Davey's appearances or for when he spoke with the 35-year-old in custody.

Justice Vanstone said she would investigate the issue and remanded Davey to appear again on May 9.

A large group of Ms Woodford's family and supporters attended court on Monday but made no comment after the hearing.
