SA outback nurse's murder now work related

South Australia's workplace safety regulator has moved to declare nurse Gayle Woodford's murder work related, reversing its original decision.

A move to reclassify the rape and murder of South Australian outback nurse Gayle Woodford as a workplace death has sparked a fresh look at similar cases.

SafeWork SA says the original decision to tell Ms Woodford's relatives that her death was not work related was wrong.

The safety regulator came to the conclusion after a review of the case by executive director Martyn Campbell, who has moved to reopen the investigation into her death.

"I am also looking at how SafeWork SA can identify whether there are other cases that need to be reassessed in light of this matter," Mr Campbell said.

Ms Woodford was lured from her home in the remote community of Fregon, where she worked in the community health centre, by Dudley Davey who had gone to the property asking for assistance.

Her body was found in a shallow grave three days later with Davey ultimately pleading guilty to her rape and murder.

He is serving a minimum 32-year jail sentence.

Ms Woodford's family has called for a coronial inquiry into her death.
