SA parly passes southeast fracking ban

The South Australian lower house has passed a bill to ban fracking in the state's southeast for 10 years.

Laws to enshrine a 10-year ban on fracking in South Australia's southeast have passed state parliament's lower house.

The bill was introduced by independent southeast MP Troy Bell amid concerns the government's promised 10-year moratorium wouldn't be sufficient.

Limestone Coast Protection Alliance spokesman Angus Ralton says passage of the bill gives the region certainty that its water resources and agricultural industries will be safe from fracture stimulation for gas for 10 years.

"This doesn't solve all the issues we face however, and we will continue to work to have a similar ban placed on conventional gas fields which also threaten our region," he said.

After winning the March election, the Liberal government regulated to enforce the 10-year moratorium but resisted plans to have the ban become law.

However, environment groups and concerned locals remained fearful the moratorium could easily be dropped should the there be another change of government.

Labor consistently opposed the moratorium and also voted against Mr Bell's bill which passed with the support of government MPs.

Lock the Gate Alliance national co-ordinator Phil Laird said the government had responded to the community's overwhelming desire to safeguard the water resources of the Limestone Coast.

Mr Laird said the fracking industry had no social licence to operate in the region, given the results of the SA election.

"Around the country, Australian communities have told their political representatives they will not accept unconventional gas and fracking," he said.

"The South Australian government has responded to the public's concern about this industry and delivered certainty for agricultural industries."
