SA pedophile set for release

The South Australian government says it can't stop the release of a convicted pedophile but hopes for strict conditions on his freedom.

The South Australian government says it can't block the release of convicted paedophile Paul Thomas after a ruling by three Supreme Court justices that he should be freed.

Attorney-general Vickie Chapman on Tuesday said although the final decision can't be changed, the state government hopes for strict terms and conditions on his release.

"In relation to the Thomas matter, our application last year, which was to have him continuously detained, was overturned by the full court last week," Ms Chapman said.

"They are the decisions of the supreme court, not executive government.

"However, we have a role in presenting the arguments for the terms and conditions of that supervision and we will do so."

Those terms and conditions are likely to include electronic monitoring and restrictions on the 50-year-old's internet access.

Thomas has been convicted for a string of offences since 1995, the most recent being obtaining child exploitation material in 2016.

The full court earlier heard he was in the "high-risk" category for further offending and was unwilling and unable to control his sexual urges.

Opposition legal affairs spokesman Kyam Maher said it was not good enough that Ms Chapman could not do anything to block Thomas' his release.

"Most South Australians would be horrified (he) could be released into the community and the state attorney-general isn't willing to do anything about it," Mr Maher said.

"We want to have a good look to see if there is any way to change the law to make sure dangerous pedophiles who are unwilling and unable to control their sexual urges stay in jail where they deserve to be."

The terms and conditions of Thomas' release will be considered in the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
