SA plan to bore Klinger out in Shield game

South Australia plan to frustrate their former captain and now Western Australian run-scorer Michael Klinger in the Sheffield Shield game starting Friday.

South Australia plan to bore their former captain and now Western Australian run-machine Michael Klinger in the Sheffield Shield game starting on Friday.

Klinger started the Shield season with unbeaten knocks of 202 and 50 in WA's win against Tasmania last week, but Redbacks captain Travis Head hopes SA's inside knowledge can prevent a repeat in the Adelaide Oval fixture.

"It's just trying to put as much pressure on him as possible, build a lot of dot balls on him," Head told reporters on Thursday.

"He has got a solid defence, he bats a long time.

"But if we can stop his scoring and try and frustrate him, that is the key for us."

Klinger led SA with distinction before crossing to WA last season when the Redbacks refused his wish for an extended contract.

And the stylish right-hander immediately made SA regret its decision: he plundered 190 and 50 not out in their first Shield meeting in Perth before posting 151 in the rematch at Adelaide Oval.

"He's a very good player but he's only human as well," Head said.

"We played with Maxi for years ... we'll have a few things for him.

"He has got runs against us before. He has got runs against everyone I guess, he's in that sort of form."

SA swing bowler Chadd Sayers, who will return from ankle surgery after missing the Shield opener last week, looms large in the plot to halt Klinger as he is renowned for bowling a tight line and length.

Squads:

SA: Travis Head (capt), Nick Benton, Tom Cooper, Mark Cosgrove, Callum Ferguson, Jake Lehmann, Tim Ludeman, Joe Mennie, Kane Richardson, Alex Ross, Kelvin Smith, Chadd Sayers, Adam Zampa (12th man to be named, one to be omitted).

WA: Shaun Marsh (capt), Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Tom Beaton, Jason Behrendorff, Will Bosisto, Marcus Harris, Michael Hogan, Michael Klinger, Simon Mackin, David Moody, Joel Paris, Sam Whiteman (12th man to be named one to be omitted)
