Criminals on the run in South Australia won't be able to hide under the cover of darkness thanks to new infra-red sensors fitted to police helicopters.

The new technology will also help find people lost in difficult terrain and track stolen vehicles during high-risk pursuits.

The $4.6 million sensors provide high-definition images and can be combined with mapping technology, allowing aircrews to co-ordinate ground resources to precise locations.

They were fitted to police helicopters recently and have now been added to the state's rescue choppers.

"This upgrade complements recent investments such as the new firearms simulator, facial recognition technology and body-worn cameras, " Police Minister Peter Malinauskas said on Tuesday.

The new system replaces less sophisticated cameras which are around 20 years old.

Superintendent David O'Donovan said the new technology meant the SA police and rescue helicopters were among the most mission-capable in the world.

"This technology enhances our search and rescue capabilities and provides state-of-the-art operational options with regard to the tracking and locating of offenders," Superintendent O'Donovan said.
