South Australians have been warned to batten down the hatches as the state prepares for drenching rain and potentially the strongest winds in more than 50 years.
One of the most severe weather systems in recent decades is set to hit SA on Wednesday and Thursday, with up to 100ml of rain forecast in the Adelaide Hills along with potentially storm-force winds in coastal areas.
"If we were to go back through our records to see times when we have had this strength of wind, we would go back to 1964 and possibly to 1948," the Bureau of Meteorology's SA director John Nairn told reporters on Tuesday.
