The South Australian government says more than 1700 jobs will be created by the $690 million upgrade to the state's public schools.

Premier Jay Weatherill said the promised investment would increase the capacity of both primary and high schools across the state.

Three new public schools will also be built - Adelaide Botanic High School in the city's centre and Birth to Year 12 schools in its south and north.

The commitment from the government is greater than the $535 million they invested on the Adelaide Oval upgrade, Premier Weatherill says.

"The magnitude of this announcement is huge and following the closure of Holden's the state government is doing everything in its power to create jobs ," he said.
