Severe bushfire conditions have been declared in three South Australian districts as the state continues to swelter through a three-day heatwave.

The mercury hit 39.7C in Adelaide on Wednesday with similar temperatures forecast for Thursday and Friday.

The Country Fire Service said total fire bans and severe conditions had been declared for the Yorke Peninsula, mid-north and Mount Lofty regions.

The Bureau of Meteorology said winds would get to about 45km/h during the day, adding to the fire risk.

Temperatures were high across the state on Wednesday with Port Pirie and Port August among the hottest with the mercury reaching 43C.

No major incidents were reported, though fire crews were called on to deal with a small grass fire at suburban Pooraka.

The heatwave has continued Adelaide's searing start to 2018 with 12 days above 35C so far this year.

The Bureau of Meteorology says a cool change will arrive in the city early on Saturday morning with temperatures dropping back to the high 20s.
