SA treasurer defends cabinet colleague

South Australian Treasurer Rob Lucas has defended a fellow minister over a letter she wrote about a budget measure.

The South Australian treasurer has defended a fellow minister who seems to be at odds with the state government over a budget measure.

Child Protection Minister Rachel Sanderson, in her role as the member for Adelaide, has written to Infrastructure Minister Stephan Knoll over the government's decision to close a Service SA centre in her electorate.

In the letter leaked to the state opposition, Ms Sanderson called on the government to look at "other options" and said a substantial number of her constituents had expressed concerns at the decision.

The Northpark outlet, where people can go for such transactions as renewing car registration or licences, is one of three the government announced in the September state budget that it would close.

Treasurer Rob Lucas said on Thursday it was not uncommon for ministers to pass on the concerns of their constituents as a local member.

"It doesn't mean that she is publicly distancing herself or it doesn't mean she is opposing a decision of the government," Mr Lucas said on Thursday.

But Opposition Leader Peter Malinauskas said the letter appeared to show a cabinet minister arguing against a cabinet decision.

"She has been party to all of these decisions herself," he said.
