Sailor en route to Aust after ocean rescue

A sailor on a solo around-the-world trip has been rescued from the Indian Ocean thousands of kilometres from Perth.

An around-the-world sailor has been rescued from the Indian Ocean west of Perth after his yacht lost its mast during rough weather.

The yacht ran into trouble on Thursday night and a commercial ship went to the solo sailor's rescue after he alerted the International Emergency Response Coordination Centre in the United States.

The ship, named the Patriot, arrived at the yacht's location and rescued the sailor about 1pm on Friday, the Australian Safety Maritime Authority said on Saturday.

AMSA also sent a jet with a West Australian police officer on board to the stricken yacht 2100 kilometres west of Perth.

The sailor is in good health, and he and the Patriot are expected to arrive in Fremantle on Monday, they say.

AMSA has thanked the Patriot for coming to the sailor's aid.

"AMSA would like express our sincere thanks to the master and crew of the Patriot for answering the call for help and rescuing the yachtsman in difficult conditions."
