Saints take Hannebery out of AFL clash

St Kilda have decided against playing star recruit Dan Hannebery in Sunday's AFL match against North Melbourne.

Hannebery finally returned to the AFL in round 14 after being dogged by injury earlier this year and had also played two VFL games.

Yet, former Sydney midfielder Hannebery was taken out of the squad on Friday, with Jack Newnes to take his place.

"It was always part of the plan that Dan would need a break at some point after an initial block of games and, with a bit of soreness lingering after the Richmond match, it made sense to do it this week," Saints' performance manager Matt Hornsby said.

"He was able to get through our main training on Thursday, but we feel that missing this weekend is the best approach as we continue to build his workload.

"He has come a long way over the past few months but it's important we are patient and realistic in our expectations with a player who is returning mid-season."

North also made one change, recalling Paul Ahern for Kyron Hayden (achilles).

Elsewhere, Melbourne veteran Jordan Lewis is back for his first game since round eight on Sunday against Carlton at the MCG.

Kyle Dunkley, the brother of Western Bulldogs premiership player Josh, will be the Demons' sixth debutant this season.

The Demons have Brayden Preuss on standby as star ruckman Max Gawn struggles to recover from an ankle sprain.

Tim Smith (calf) and Oskar Baker are out of the side.

Darcy Lang will return for Carlton, replacing Charlie Curnow (knee).

GWS have decided against recalling defender Lachie Whitfield for Sunday's big game against Brisbane, giving him another week after his collarbone injury.

Dawson Simpson will replace Shane Mumford, while former Bulldogs player Marcus Adams will make his Lions debut at Giants Stadium.

Brisbane also recalled Alex Witherden as they lost Oscar McInerney to concussion and Brandon Starcevich was dropped.
