Victorian coach David Saker has fired more shots at Australian cricket hierarchy, calling Nathan Coulter-Nile's Test promotion ridiculous.

Saker also queried whether Mitch Marsh should be batting at No.6 in the Test team.

"I'm a bit surprised they've gone for Coulter-Nile, seeing he hasn't played (Test cricket)," Saker told SEN.

"To me, that's ridiculous - there are three or four other guys who would have been first-picked before him.

"But that's the way they've gone."

Saker was then asked about whether Victorian batsman Marcus Stoinis could be closing on national honours.

Stoinis scored 75 and 110 in the Shield win over WA.

That prompted Saker to say that whoever bats at No.6 in the Test team should be an out-and-out batsman who can bowl a bit.

"Stoinis is an out-and-out batter who bowls a a bit," Saker said.

"If you bat at seven, you become more of a bowling allrounder.

"While Mitch Marsh is batting at six, he's there to get runs, he hasn't produced that.

"He's obviously bowled okay, but I think Stoinis could do that sort of job anyway."

Last month, Saker had questioned whether Victorian quick James Pattinson was ready to return to Test cricket, prompting Australian coach Darren Lehmann to reply that he should stick to running the Victorian team.

There was more criticism when Pattinson was rested from a Shield game, Saker saying it was a decision by the national program.

Earlier on Tuesday, Saker also talked about the management of top-level fast bowlers as the Australian team copes with ongoing injury problems.

"Fast bowlers are always going to get injured at some stage - you have to be careful of their workloads," Saker said.

"But sometimes we take it the other way and we protect them too much.

"We don't let them bowl enough.

"It's in the hands of Cricket Australia ... it's taken out of our hands at times, but we think we're doing a good job with the guys here."

But Saker is rapt that Victorian paceman Scott Boland has joined the Test squad as a standby player, praising his long-term form.

Boland joined Pattinson and Peter Siddle as Victorian quicks in the Australian squad.
