Salmonella - what you should know

As the number of cases of salmonella from contaminated lettuce grows here are signs to beware of.

SALMONELLA: THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS.

WHAT IS SALMONELLA?

Salmonella is a bacteria that causes a form of gastro. Severity will depend on how much of the bacteria has been ingested.

SYMPTOMS OF SALMONELLOSIS

* Diarrhoea, may contain blood and mucous.

* Vomiting, nausea and stomach cramps.

* Fever.

* Headache

* Dehydration

CAUSES OF SALMONELLOSIS

* Undercooked meat, especially poultry

* Raw eggs

* Contaminated packaged foods

* Contact with another person with salmonellosis.

* Pets and farm animals who may have salmonella bacteria in their faeces

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

* Doctor will take a poo sample

* If diagnosed, take fluids

* Antibiotics may be required in infants

* Recovery usually takes seven days.

PREVENTION OF SALMONELLA POISONING

* Thoroughly cook food

* Don't use dirty or cracked eggs

* Wash hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds before handling food.

* Food handlers must stop work until symptoms stop.

* Keep children home from school
