The appeal, held over the weekend, had raised an estimated $6.8 million across Australia by Sunday night, well down on the charity's target.
But spokesman Major Brad Halse said the interim Sunday night figure was about five per cent greater than the same figure last year.

"Although we have not yet reached our national doorknock goal of $9.7 million, early indications look promising that we will go very close to achieving the target," Mr Halse said in a statement.
"There are still many regions where results are not finalised and collecting will continue through this week."
Northern Territorians have proved more generous than the rest of Australia.
Interim figures show the Territory's donations are up 80 per cent on last year at $67,000.
Victorians gave 12 per cent more than 2009 with $1.5 million, while Queensland coughed up 886,000 -- up seven per cent.
South Australia was up five per cent on $254,000 and Western Australia ($410,000) and the ACT ($203,000) were both up by four per cent.
Even though it gave most to the appeal with a whopping $3.5 million, NSW managed to give just two per cent more than last year.
There were no comparative figures for Tasmania, which donated 68,000.
