Rising British music star Sam Smith will tour Australia for the first time next month to promote his debut album.

The soul singer, best known for his chart-topping debut single Money On My Mind, will be in Australia between April 28 and 30.

It's been an incredible year for the Brit Award winner. Two of his songs have gone to No.1 in the UK, including Money On My Mind.

The BBC crowned Smith the new artist most likely to enjoy international success when he was named the winner of BBC's Sound of 2014 in January.

Smith also recently sang on the hit US TV show Saturday Night Live, where he admitted he was a little daunted by the idea of performing to such a large TV audience.

"I'm one of the only artists that's been asked to do it who hasn't had an album out, so you can imagine how I was feeling on the day, you know you've got a lot to live up to," he told the Nine Network.

He also said it was "weird" that famous people were becoming his fans.

"It's really surreal, ... Rhianna started following me on Twitter today which is just crazy, weird things have started happening, so its great," Smith said.

Smith got his big break in 2012, as the featured vocalist on Latch by dance act Disclosure. He then collaborated with British producer Naughty Boy for hit song La La La.

His debut album In The Lonely Hour will be released on May 23.
