Sam Tomkins fit to face New Zealand

Sam Tomkins is expected to be named in Steve McNamara's 19-man squad for the opening Test against New Zealand - and challenge for the fullback spot.

England coach Steve McNamara says Sam Tomkins is part of a fully-fit squad from which he will select his team to play New Zealand in the opening Test at Hull on Sunday.

Tomkins was forced to miss England's 84-4 win over France at Leigh on Saturday with the knee injury that curtailed his spell in the NRL with New Zealand Warriors.

The Wigan favourite has not played for two months because of the injury, but is expected to be named in McNamara's 19-man squad on Friday and to challenge Zak Hardaker for the fullback spot.

"We've got a couple of bumps and bruises from the French game," McNamara said at the squad's training base at St George's Park in Burton-on-Trent.

"There's nothing major, but things that may curtail some players' involvement in the whole of training.

"But the seven who didn't play on Saturday will train fully, including Sam."

Kiwis coach Steve Kearney is checking on the fitness of prop forward Adam Blair and centre Jordan Kahu at his club's camp in Perpignan after both men picked up injuries in the tourists' bruising 34-16 win over Leeds at Headingley last Friday.

McNamara has played down the prospect of England following New Zealand's example by warming up for a series against a leading Super League club.

Instead, the former Hull, Bradford and Huddersfield forward wants to maintain close links with the French, despite their record 15-try mauling at the Leigh Sports Village.

"We've got a responsibility to enhance the international game and France need help and assistance to achieve their potential," he said.

"They're a lot better than the team that was beaten by 80 points.

"We want to play as many international games as we can so it's more about working through some of the issues and problems they have. I'd look at that more than playing against a club side."
