Protracted legal action is likely in the US state of Utah over same-sex marriages.

More than a thousand couples who decided to marry are now in legal limbo following Utah's decision not to recognise any of the unions for now and the Supreme Court's decision to put further weddings on hold.

North American correspondent John Stempin told Greg Dyett that same sex marriages in Utah were always going to be controversial.
