Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has not closed the door on holding a plebiscite on same-sex marriage before the end of the year, saying it depends on when the election is held.
He told Sky News on Sunday the plebiscite will take place as soon as practicable after the election.
"Whether that happens before the end of the year obviously depends on when the election is and at this stage we don't know that," he said, although he has indicated that a July 2 double dissolution election is likely.
