Controversial halfback Chris Sandow has taken the first step toward an NRL return after signing a one-year deal with Queensland Cup side Brisbane Norths.
Sandow, 28, is still under contract with Warrington for 2017 after walking out on the English club in the off season.
However the Wolves have agreed to loan Sandow to Norths this year.
They will review the loan's terms if Sandow's form attracts an NRL club's attention.
"The loan is for the Norths Devils only, meaning other arrangements would need to be made if Sandow attracted interest from an NRL club," a Queensland Rugby League statement said.
Sandow's career was in limbo after he refused to fly back from Australia and return to Warrington in the off-season with a year left on his UK deal.
Sandow said he stayed in Australia for family reasons.
Wolves boss Tony Smith wasn't impressed, saying Sandow became "unreliable" and "a pain in the proverbial" after his 2015 arrival.
However he appears to have mellowed.
"On behalf of the club, I would like to thank the Warrington Wolves for their assistance and professionalism in organising this player loan," Norths CEO Jamie Dowse said.
"Chris has been training with the club over the past four weeks and is ready to play once the loan has been processed.
"Chris has played at the highest levels of the game in the NRL and in the UK Super League, so his experience will be invaluable for the younger players."
Sandow has made no secret of his desire to return to the NRL since leaving Warrington.
But the ex-South Sydney No.7 appeared to damage his chances when footage emerged in January of him fighting on the streets of hometown Cherbourg.
He pleaded guilty to public nuisance and was fined $300.
After being sacked by Gold Coast for ill discipline in 2008, Sandow played 162 NRL games for South Sydney (2008-11) and the Eels (2012-15).
