Jason Sangha has given a glimpse of his immense potential after starring with bat and in the field in the Sydney's Thunder's rain-affected 15-run win over the Melbourne Stars.

The 19-year-old became the youngest player to notch a Big Bash League half century to guide his side to an imposing 5-181 on Friday night.

The Stars' target was reduced to 90 off 8 overs after rain stopped play just three balls into their innings however they were rarely in the hunt as their top order collapsed and were restricted to just 6-74.

Sangha starred with an unbeaten 65 as he and Daniel Sams (34) put on an influential 77-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Sams should have been out on three occasions - after he was put down twice by Nick Larkin and dropped by Nepalese sensation Sandeep Lamichhane - before being dismissed by Dwayne Bravo in the 20th over.

Left-armer Sams was also sensational with the ball, taking 3-5 from his two overs.

After coming to the crease with his side's innings in the balance at 4-99 in the 13th over, Sangha clubbed four maximums in his 36-ball innings, including by a massive six to deep midwicket off a Marcus Stoinis free hit.

He was touted as a Test player-in-waiting after clubbing an impressive Sheffield Shield century against Tasmania last month and described by Kerry O'Keeffe as the best technician since Ricky Ponting.

He again showed his class when he danced along the long-on boundary to clutch a catch to dismiss Stars dangerman Marcus Stoinis.

With their side under pressure to score big runs quickly, the Stars wilted under the pressure.

When Sams snared Travis Dean and Glenn Maxwell in his second over to have the Melbourne side in deep trouble at 3-20, it spelled the end of the Stars' chances.

The Stars' top four of Ben Dunk (2), Dean (7), Maxwell (0) and Stoinis (2) all failed to make double figures.

And when Bravo (11) fell to Gurinder Sandhu with the Stars at 5-33, the game was as good as over.

Lamichhane was the lone shining light for the Stars, taking 2-36 in a debut that showcased plenty of promise.

"He's just an unbelievable player," Sams said of Sangha.

"He can access parts of the ground that other batters can't. The way he can slice the ball but can have power is amazing. Standing at the other end, it's absolutely fantastic watching him bat. He's going to be someone to look out for."

Stars spinner Adam Zampa said it continued his side's regrettable history of slow starts.

"I think there's a few decision-making things that happened on the field, a bit of execution, it was tough tonight with the wet ball," Zampa said.

"Bowling was tough."
