Santner hoses down Black Caps spin hype

Don't expect New Zealand's bamboozling of India with spin to become a regular feature says man of the match Mitchell Santner.

Playing spin has never been Australia's strong suit, so New Zealand left-arm orthodox tweaker Mitchell Santner could be the No.1 concern after he took the best ever Twenty20 figures against India on Tuesday.

Thriving in spin-friendly conditions at Nagpur's VCA Stadium, the Black Caps dismissed India for 79 to win by 47 runs, rewarding the decision to select only one specialist seamer.

Santner's 4-11 was also the third-best T20 return by a New Zealand bowler, while India's total was their second lowest ever in the shortest form of the game.

He, along with offspinner Nathan McCullum (3-18) and leggie Ish Sodhi (2-15), now pose a significant threat against Australia in the Aussies' T20 opener on Friday in Dharamsala.

Not that Santner will be buying into those expectations.

"Everywhere you go in India is going to be different," he said.

"Mumbai for our warm-up games was good for the seamers and obviously today it spun. We'll have to see what the pitches produce."

The trio bowled 46 dot balls between them, tying a classy Indian top order in knots and taking a total of 9-44 off 11 overs in a red-letter day for New Zealand's unheralded slow bowling stocks. Black Caps spinners had never previously taken more than five wickets in a T20.

Santner claimed the key scalps of Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and MS Dohni and bowled much quicker than usual through the air.
