South Australia's big blackout fired up social media with comments ranging from the serious and sober to the sometimes hilarious.

With power out across the state for several hours on Wednesday, Twitter was awash with people having a crack at SA, some suggesting the last person to leave had indeed turned out the lights.

Adelaide identity Quentin Kenihan declared the Zombie Apocalypse had arrived while Adelaide University researcher Roman Kostecki posted a picture of locals with banners proclaiming the landing of aliens.

Sarah Hammond looked on the brighter side, tweeting a picture of a darkened city and describing the blackout as a "once in a lifetime opportunity to see the whole of Adelaide without power".

While others suggested Adelaide's birth rate would spike in nine months, Jack the Insider said "even in darkness Adelaide still has a better nightlife than Sydney".

But the majority of people took the situation seriously, urging everyone to stay safe during the emergency, especially on the roads.

Ed Moriarty summed it up on Twitter: "Hope everyone is okay in Adelaide today. Stay safe."
