Larry, South Australia's giant lobster, has survived the hammer but may yet be gobbled up.

The 17 metre-high, four-tonne fibreglass and steel sculpture, is a beloved tourist icon at Kingston in the state's southeast, sitting outside a restaurant and function centre.

The property and its giant crustacean went up for auction on Friday but was passed in.

"There were no bids on the day but we did have registered bidders," selling agent Linda Tait said.

Ms Tait said Larry was likely to find a home with an interstate buyer.

"We've had a couple of interstate people come to have a look at him," she said.

Larry was built in 1979 and was recently rescued from dilapidation by a $50,000 makeover.

It is considered a must see on Australia's list of big things.

Larry attracted nationwide attention in 2016 when radio personalities Hamish and Andy got on board with a crowdfunding campaign to help raise repair funds.
