SA's horror two months on the roads

South Australia's road toll has spiked after 24 deaths in the past two months, an increase the state's road minister has described as "utterly tragic".

South Australia has endured a "shocking" increase in road deaths over the last two months and the loss of life has to stop, Road Safety Minister Peter Malinauskas says.

With 24 deaths in July and August, SA's toll for 2017 has jumped to 63 compared to 52 at the same time last year.

"The past two months have been utterly tragic, with a shocking increase in road fatalities," Mr Peter Malinauskas said.

"The loss of life has to stop and we have to pull together as a community to ensure that this number doesn't continue to rise."

The spike in deaths has also prompted the Motor Accident Commission to revive a media campaign calling on drivers to take more care.

The Remember or be Remembered campaign urges motorists to remember the road rules, or risk being remembered as a road fatality.

According to the commission's figures, South Australian roads have been particularly dangerous this year.

Twelve riders have died in crashes compared to five at the same time in 2016 and 10 pedestrians have been killed compared to four.

"Unfortunately we continue to see a small minority of motorists not following the rules, not wearing a seatbelt, driving with excessive speed while distracted," MAC communications manager Matt Hanton said.
