US doctor Doug Stein has been working with Australian physicians to demystify the procedure in the hope of slowing world population growth.

He said the simple operation was something we need to talk about for a number of reasons.

"There are not only personal benefits to vasectomy but also benefits to the family to the socitety and to the environment," he said.

He said there was no bigger issue facing the world than population growth.

He has teamed up with documentary maker Jonathan Stack to help spread his message of birth control.

"We have enough people on the planet. We don't need a billion more people we need to take better care of the seven billion that we have so why make more life than you want," Mr Stack said.

The world's population has doubled to 7 billion in the last 50 years.
