SBS's interactive online documentary 'The Block' has received a prestigious Walkley Award for Coverage of Indigenous Affairs at a ceremony in Canberra overnight.
The online documentary, produced in partnership with the Redfern Indigenous community, is a virtual time capsule that explores the history and significance of Redfern's Indigenous-owned housing precinct, 'the Block'.
SBS Managing Director, Michael Ebeid, said, “This accolade is recognition of SBS continuing to lead the way in producing powerful and insightful interactive online content that brings important subjects to the attention of all Australians, in unique and meaningful ways. SBS is committed to exploring new and exciting ways to engage with audiences beyond the television screen.”

SBS Director of Online and Emerging Platforms, Marshall Heald, added, “The SBS Online team continues to push boundaries in the creation of unique and engaging online content.
'The Block: Stories From a Meeting Place' uses new technology to tell stories from the world's oldest storytellers, and is an example of how new and emerging technologies have the ability to tell powerful stories and connect with audiences in ways that traditional media cannot.”
The production began in late 2010, not long after the Block's 41 remaining residents received notice to vacate their homes, ending an era of struggle, community and self-determination that had lasted nearly 40 years.
Combining interviews, innovative panoramic photography, and an ambient soundscape, users journey around the precinct to truly explore the diversity of the Block and its community.
Other features of the project include a timeline of events using rare material from the SBS archives.
The Walkley Awards recognise the best in Australian journalism, showcasing the strength and diversity ofthe profession in Australia.
The 2012 awards presentation was held on Friday 30 November in Parliament House in Canberra for a special 'Capital Edition' of the Awards, returning there for the first time since 1984 as the city prepares to celebrate its centenary in 2013.
