SBS stylist gives thumbs up to new Aussie Olympic uniforms

SBS stylist Lesley Crawford has given the new Australian Olympic opening ceremony uniform her tick of approval, but says they won't photograph well.

The sleek pale green and white suits were launched in Sydney on Wednesday morning. 

"They look great, I like the green. I think they look really nice, I like the white bottoms, they look very clean. I like everything about them, but the only problem is they’ll never photograph well because the stripes are too fine and they’re strobing,” Ms Crawford said.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and fashion retailer Sportscraft unveiled the new uniforms for the 2016 Australian Olympic Team at a launch at Sydney's Bondi Beach.

Sticking to the iconic green and gold, the athletes will don green and white striped blazers with white bottoms during the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics, finished with a gold embroidered coat of arms badge and burnished gold Australian Olympic coat of arms buttons.

The blazers also pay homage to past gold medallists by creating unique lining inside the jacket with each athlete’s name.

London games gold medalist Jess Fox told Seven she was a fan, "I think it has got that fun Rio feel to it but it has that vintage inspiration to it from the previous Olympics," she said.

Other than the fine stripes, Ms Crawford really liked the rest of the uniform and picked up on the "private school" get up suggestions thrown around on social media.

“It’s collegiate, it's very collegiate. But I think uniforms are like that, they are a uniform after all. But I don’t mind it, I like the darker green detail. I think they’re really okay apart from the fact that they won’t photograph well, so that’s a pity,” Ms Crawford said.

The designs were created over a two year period with Sportscraft who worked closely with the AOC, athletes, and the Australian Olympic Uniform Committee. The design is to reflect the Australian lifestyle and Rio environment while also being comfortable for the athletes.

"They're dealing with all of shapes and sizes, so they need something pretty generalised. Especially since they're going to a hot climate, they're appropriate for that," Ms Crawford said.

The Opening Ceremony for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games takes place on August 5.
