School for Monash Children's Hospital

A $6.8 million high-tech school will be built at a Melbourne hospital so sick kids don't fall behind in their studies.

A $6.8 million school will be built at a Melbourne hospital so children who are chronically ill or have mental health problems don't fall behind in their studies.

The facility will include four classroom spaces and a computer lab at the Monash Children's Hospital - which the state government says is on track to be completed later this year.

A principal will be appointed and 10 to 15 teachers will be hired to support 170 students per day.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced the new school on Sunday, saying systems will also be installed on each hospital bed so students can video conference with their own school.

"These kids are too sick often to go to school, so school will come to them," Mr Andrews said.

"That's a great way to make sure their ill health does not have any more consequences in their lives that it needs to."

Education Minister James Merlino said the investment will address a gap in the southeast growth area.

Children and young people who need four weeks of hospitalisation will be able to access the service.

"It's also about supporting them when they're recovering at home and transitioning back to school," Mr Merlino said.

"We're improving the technology so if a child cannot move from their bed they'll be able to video conference back to their school and access teaching and learning resources online so at no stage in a child's treatment and recovery will they be disconnected from their school."

The school will complement existing services provided by the Royal Children's Hospital and The Alfred Hospital.
