Schoolies have been evacuated after a fire at a Gold Coast hotel, while a second student has been charged after allegedly balcony hopping at a Surfers Paradise high rise.
Black smoke was seen billowing from the basement of the hotel on Orchid Avenue just after 12.30am (AEST) on Tuesday.
Firefighter Dave Richards says everyone staying there was being evacuated when crews arrived.
He told reporters that crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and found a burning car, adding that there were no reports of injuries.
"It was all very distressing but was well managed by management and the police, who arrived early in the piece," he said.

Meanwhile, two young people have now been charged for high-rise balcony hopping during the end-of-school celebrations on the Gold Coast.
A 17-year-old has been charged with high risk activity after allegedly balcony hopping on the 11th floor of a Surfers Paradise high rise.
An 18-year-old man from NSW was charged with the same offence after he balcony-hopped on the eighth floor of a Surfers Paradise building on Saturday.
Police have repeatedly warned schoolies they'll be evicted if they risk their lives in such a fashion.
