Schools to receive NBN technology cash

Labor is offering schools grants for video conferencing equipment if it wins the federal election.

Australian schools will be offered grants to buy video conferencing equipment to create virtual classrooms if Labor wins the election.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced on Wednesday a $20 million fund to help schools buy equipment to take advantage of the national broadband network.

About 1000 schools will receive $20,000 grants to buy video conferencing technology, Mr Rudd said.

"We believe in turbo-charging Australia's education future," he told reporters in Brisbane.

"This is practical stuff, it's good stuff."

Mr Rudd said students will be able to connect to other classrooms across the country and the world.
