Scoring spree as Super Netball starts

West Coast Fever's Jamaican shooter Jhaniele Fowler has posted a record individual score in the opening round of Super Netball.

A record-breaking Super Netball debut from towering Jamaican shooter Jhaniele Fowler, a couple of one-point games and a dose of revenge highlighted an eventful opening round.

Fowler netted 66 of her 68 attempts in West Coast Fever's 74-56 win over the Thunderbirds in Adelaide on Sunday.

Fever were the only one of the eight teams to get the maximum of eight points on offer under the new scoring system, where a bonus point is awarded to the winner of every quarter.

The value of the new system for a losing team was underlined in Saturday's opening match of the season when Melbourne Vixens squeezed out Collingwood 59-58.

The Magpies still picked up three points, as they won all of the quarters apart from the second, though Vixens collected the victory with Mwai Kumwenda hitting the winning shot.

Over 9000 attended Sunday's double-header in Sydney where the two NSW teams scored wins over Queensland opposition.

The Giants avenged their 2017 grand final loss to Sunshine Coast Lightning with a 54-51win, with midcourter Kimberlee Green and defender Kristiana Manu'a each making a successful return form a long-term injury.

In the second game, NSW swifts overturned an eight-goal deficit to squeeze out a 54-53 win, with debutant Sophie Garbin making the winning shot with seven seconds left.

In Adelaide, Fowler broke her own record of 65, the previous biggest haul in the last 20 years spanning the three different competitions contested by Australian clubs in that time.

"My girls fed me a lot (of ball) so I had to convert them," said Fowler, who played for New Zealand franchise Southern Steel between 2013-17.

Fever and Diamonds goal attack Natalie Medhurst seemingly had no qualms about playing the minor supporting role to her new shooting colleague.

"She (Fowler) is going to score a large bulk of the goals and that's why we got her, that's what she does, that's her job and she delivers on that beautifully," she said.

The only negative for Fever was an ankle injury to centre Verity Charles, who was helped from the court in the third quarter.

In round two, Thunderbirds host Giants and Fever are at home to the Magpies on Saturday.

In Sunday's games, Firebirds host Lightning in a Queensland derby and Swifts play away to the Vixens.
