By his own admission, Test prop Matt Scott is in "no rush" to re-sign with North Queensland.
But the Newcastle target says he has not given up on emulating his Cowboys heroes and ending his NRL career a one club player.
The North Queensland co-captain has been linked to a lucrative three year Knights deal from 2018 reportedly worth almost $3 million.
In contrast, the Cowboys have reportedly tabled a two-year, $1.2 million contract extension for their inspirational forward.
The signs looked ominous for the Cowboys when Scott told reporters last month that he was "not tied down" to North Queensland as he mulled over the Knights deal.
And Scott said on Monday he would not be rushed into a decision, dismissing reports that he would make a call before Saturday's NRL season opener against Canberra.
However, Scott claimed he had not given up on his dream of becoming a Cowboy for life despite the big money Knights offer.
"If I can sort something out with the Cowboys I would be more than happy to stay here and finish my career at a club that has done so much for me," Scott told AAP.
"There's no doubt it is something that I always wanted."
Ever since the veteran forward made his NRL debut in 2004 for North Queensland, Scott has dreamed of joining the likes of Cowboys greats Matt Bowen and Paul Bowman as one club players.
"In my career I always looked up to guys like Matty, Paul Bowman and Aaron Payne - it is something I would love to do," Scott said.
Scott, 32 in July, said there was no deadline for contract talks - although he seemed tempted to provide one after enduring months of speculation.
"It is one thing I am sick of hearing about," he laughed ahead of his 14th NRL season.
"But it's always expected.
"I haven't put a timeline on contract talks and I am in no rush to do so.
"It is very important to get it right.
"I am very happy with how things are progressing at the Cowboys - now I would like to get on with the footy and let the contract look after itself."
