A stellar ball-striking display has kept world No.9 Adam Scott firmly in the mix after a mouth-watering moving day at the Masters.

The 2013 Masters champion hit 15 of 18 greens as he surged up the leaderboard with a three-under-par 69 in the third round at Augusta National on Saturday (Sunday AEST).

Scott ensures he'll start a dramatic final round of the Masters alone in seventh place, three shots back of leaders Sergio Garcia (70) and a red-hot Justin Rose, whose 67 was the low round of the day.

World No.11 Garcia and 2013 US Open champion Rose finished 54 holes with a six-under total.

World No.8 Rickie Fowler (71) is shot back at five under in third, while 2015 Masters winner Jordan Spieth and fellow Americans Ryan Moore (69) and Charley Hoffman (72) share fourth place at four under.

World No.6 Spieth was a hot product on Saturday, swashbuckling his way to 68 two days after almost ruining his Masters campaign with a quadruple-bogey nine on the par-5 15th.

Earlier, Jason Day dominated Amen Corner but the world No.3 admits his comeback is likely to have come too late to have an effect on the Masters leaderboard.

Taking advantage of pristine morning conditions while playing in the first group off, the 29-year-old bagged four consecutive birdies starting at the par-3 12th and signed for a creditable 69, climbing back to a three-over total.

Requiring a marker following the withdrawal of world No.1 Dustin Johnson, the 2015 US PGA Champion played with Masters marker and Augusta National member Jeff Knox.

"The first two days kind of put me out of it and today was a good round to get myself kind of back to good form," said Day.

Amateur world No.1 Curtis Luck fell back in the race for low amateur honours, handing three shots back with a 75 to finish 54 holes at nine-over.

The Perth 20-year-old's only competition for the Masters silver medal is American amateur Stewart Hagestad, who signed for a 74 to drop to five over.

Also on nine over is Marc Leishman, who crashed out of contention with four back-nine bogeys en route to a 78.
