Scott Morrison arranges online summit with India's Narendra Modi

Defence, trade and education are topics on the agenda when Australia's prime minister hosts an online summit with India's leader this week.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison will be holding a a "Virtual Summit" with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on Thursday.

Mr Morrison said he wanted to discuss the countries' responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"As like-minded democracies and natural strategic partners, Australia and India are in full agreement that our strong bilateral relationship is key to a more open, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific," Mr Morrison said in a statement on Sunday.

"Prime Minister Modi and I will also discuss new opportunities in defence, trade, maritime safety and security, science and technology, and education."

Mr Morrison posted a message on Twitter saying he looked forward to the meeting, but was disappointed he would not be able to share a meal with Mr Modi.

Mr Modi replied that he too shared the disappointment of not being able to share a meal together. 

"Once we achieve a decisive victory against COVID-19, we will enjoy the Samosas together," he said.
