Midfielder Scott Selwood and defender Jake Kolodjashnij will miss Geelong's first few matches of the AFL season due to injury.

Selwood - the younger brother of Cats captain Joel Selwood - has been hampered in recent weeks by a sore foot, while Kolodjashnij has a groin complaint.

Coach Chris Scott says Selwood's foot injury is unrelated to the ankle problem which limited him to just five games in his first season at Geelong in 2016 and also troubled him in the latter years of his stint at West Coast.

"He's had a super pre-season and just at the death he got a bit of a sore foot," Scott said on Tuesday.

"It's unrelated to his previous ankle injury so that will hold him up for maybe another couple of weeks.

"He's on track to play probably round three I'd say, but it's a little hard to get certainty on it.

"I will say that the problem he's had seems to have turned the corner so he'll be back into training with the group and looking to get going early in the year."

Third-year defender Kolodjashnij has not been sighted during the pre-season campaign due to a persistent groin problem.

"He's done a fair bit of work but he hasn't been able to get the final five or 10 per cent of intensity," said Scott.

"It's disappointing for us that he's not available because he is someone we have earmarked to help transition our slightly ageing defensive group."

Impressive rookie Zac Guthrie and fellow youngsters Brandan Parfitt and Tom Stewart are all in contention to make their senior debuts against the Dockers.
