Adam Scott is in great shape heading into the weekend at the US PGA Tour's Honda Classic in Florida, "high-quality ball striking" lifting the Australian to a classy 65 on Friday.

Scott surged into contention after two rounds of the tournament, sitting tied for fourth at five-under overall, three shots behind outright leader American Rickie Fowler.

After finishing tied for second at the Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles last week, Scott was again in good touch in tricky winds at the Palm Beach Gardens course with a bogey-free five-under round to go with his opening 70 on Thursday.

"I played really good tee to green; really really good," said Scott.

"It was high-quality ball striking and not completely stress-free but pretty good for around this place.

Scott had an eagle on the third hole and three other birdies in the second-best round of the day as the field struggled for under-par rounds.

"Things are starting to shape up nicely," he said.

"Obviously I've played a lot of good rounds of golf so far this year - lots of rounds in the 60s - so that's good for the confidence.

John Senden was the next-best Australian only two shots behind Scott at three-under after a top-shelf 66 while Stuart Appleby (72) at two-over was the only other of his compatriots to make the cut.

Geoff Ogilvy (74, six-over), Robert Allenby (74, eight-over) and Matt Jones (76, 11-over) won't be on the course over the weekend.

Jimmy Walker (66) is one shot behind Fowler (66) while Sergio Garcia is third at six-under.

Phil Mickelson just made the cut following a 74 that leaves him at three-over.
