Scott's experience could count for Maroons

Matt Scott is the most experienced State of Origin player available to Queensland and that could work in his favour when teams are selected for game one.

Matt Scott's State of Origin career is a chance of being revived at age 33 with the veteran prop the most experienced player available to Queensland coach Kevin Walters.

Scott hasn't played for the Maroons since 2016, after he missed 2017 with a knee injury before being overlooked last year.

However, Queensland are facing something of a leadership gulf in 2019, after they lost 267 games of Origin experience in the past two years through retirements.

Scott's 22 games for the Maroons make him the most experienced Queenslander available for selection, given Darius Boyd was one of several players to retire from representative football last year.

Scott is also back to showing improvements in his second year back from his knee reconstructions, with his workload increasing for North Queensland.

"He's a good old pro and we're lacking a bit of experience across everywhere this year and he could be the one who provides that," Walters told the Big Sports Breakfast.

"He's been certainly much better this year than what he was putting up last year.

"We'll see how the next month goes but no doubt he'll be wanting to get back in a Maroons jersey as well."

Walters' comments come after Cowboys coach Paul Green told his cast of representative players on Friday night their Origin spots would be in danger due to the club's poor form.

The Cowboys have won just two of seven games to start the season, as one of three Queensland teams in the bottom half of the ladder.

But Walters said he was still reasonably happy with the majority of the Cowboys' Queensland hopefuls, with the state's player pool at low levels.

"Josh McGuire has been a standout for them, Michael Morgan has been in on attack," he said.

"Coen Hess a little bit patchy, Gavin Cooper has those steady lines as we know he does do."
