Search continues for cruise ship passenger

Authorities are searching for an American man who is believed to have fallen overboard from a cruise ship which arrived in Sydney this week.

A search is continuing for an American man who is believed to have fallen overboard a cruise ship which arrived in Sydney this week.

The 61-year-old was travelling alone on the Golden Princes, which arrived in Sydney Harbour on Thursday.

The alarm was raised on Wednesday when a steward raised concerns about his whereabouts.

Subsequent searches failed to find the missing passenger and Princess Cruises says the incident is being treated as a man overboard situation.

NSW Police and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority are investigating and the ship's CCTV footage is being reviewed.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the guest's family in America with whom we have communicated directly since he was reported missing," a Princes Cruises spokesman told AAP in a statement on Friday.

The man had joined the cruise in Noumea.

The liner docked in Sydney on Thursday after completing a 13-day round-trip cruise to Fiji and other South Pacific destinations.

It was cleared to depart the city again on Thursday night bound for Papua New Guinea.
