Search continues for Tassie shark victim

Police continue to patrol waters off Tasmania's east coast near the site of a fatal shark attack, searching for any remains of victim Damian Johnson.

Marine police are continuing to search off Tasmania's east coast for any remains of shark attack victim, Damian Johnson.

The 46-year-old from Hobart was killed on Saturday morning while diving for scallops with his daughter, who witnessed the attack, near Maria Island.

Later in the day police were seen bringing a body ashore at the nearby township of Triabunna.

But in a statement on Monday police said they are continuing to look for additional remains.

"Subject to weather conditions, marine police will undertake further searches along the coast for Mr Johnson's remains or equipment," police said.

The species of shark has not been confirmed but there have been recent sightings in the area of a 4.5 metre great white.

Mr Johnson's daughter Olivia, aged in her 20s, had returned to the boat with a haul of scallops but re-entered the water when her father failed to surface.

It was then she saw the shark mauling him.

Police declined to comment on the nature of Mr Johnson's injuries but said he was dead when brought to the surface by his air hose.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr Johnson's brother-in-law David Paynter has asked for privacy.

"As everyone can appreciate this is an extremely devastating and difficult time for everyone involved and those that Damian loved and that loved him," Mr Paynter said.
