CCTV footage is being scoured to find a driver who ran over and killed a man at a Northern Territory truck stop, possibly without knowing he had done so.
The body of an Aboriginal man, 29, was found in a truck bay on the Stuart Highway opposite the Mataranka Hotel on Thursday evening.
"The deceased man was run over by a vehicle in the truck parking area," Detective Acting Superintendent Brendan Lindner said in a statement on Saturday.
"At present we cannot rule out any vehicle, however the likelihood is that the vehicle was a truck. It is a distinct possibility that the driver of the vehicle is unaware the man was run over."
Supt Linder appealed for anyone travelling through Mataranka at about 6pm on Thursday to contact police, especially if they have dash-cam footage.
Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV from numerous locations in Mataranka to identify all vehicles travelling through the township.
"We wish to speak with all motorists, particularly truck drivers, who used the truck parking area in Mataranka opposite the Mataranka Hotel between midday and 6.15pm," Supt Linder said.
He said police also wanted to speak to anyone who was at the Mataranka Hotel who may of witnessed the incident or who could assist detectives with the movements of the deceased before the incident.
