Search for father, son missing in Tas bush

Police are concerned for the safety of a father and son missing in the Tasmanian wilderness after their gear was found at their campsite.

Two helicopters are searching the Tasmanian wilderness for a father and son who have gone missing without their tent and wet weather gear.

The 42-year-old man and his 13-year-old son were camping near Scotts Peak but failed to return as expected on Tuesday afternoon, so police launched a land and air search that night.

"We are doing everything we can to locate the father and son as quickly as possible," Sergeant Chris Williams said on Wednesday.

Both of Tasmania's rescue helicopters are searching the area.

The duo's tent, car and wet weather gear were found at their campground.

Tasmania Police said the pair's intention had been to do day walks in the area.

But the walking log on Tuesday indicated they were planning to do a Western Arthurs traverse, which takes several days.

"We have significant concerns for their safety due to the fact they are ill-equipped for the cold and wet conditions and they have little bushwalking experience," Sergeant Williams said.

A police search forward command post has been set up at Lake Pedder Wilderness Lodge.
