Search for lost NZ swimmer off Vic beach

A search for a missing New Zealand man swept out to sea off a beach on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula will resume at first light.

A New Zealander is feared drowned after being swept out to sea from a beach on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

The man, in his 20s, had been standing on rocks with friends when two of them fell or were swept into the water, a police spokeswoman said.

One of the men made it back to shore at Pearse's Beach near Blairgowrie on Wednesday afternoon.

The group then called triple zero but a five-hour sea search until dark, about 8.30pm (AEDT), failed to find the other man.

A search involving a police helicopter, officers and water police will resume at first light on Thursday.

Officers are also trying to contact the missing man's family in New Zealand, the police spokeswoman said.

The man is feared drowned and the search is considered a recovery operation.
