A two hour air search of waters off the central Queensland coast has failed to find any trace of a man who fell off a catamaran.

The 39-year-old man was reported missing around 6.30am on Monday after going overboard off a sailing catamaran that was moored close to Middle Percy Island, about 70km southeast of Mackay.

A rescue helicopter was sent to the site after 7am but a search failed to find the missing man.

Two fixed wing aircraft are expected to continue the search on Monday afternoon and a volunteer rescue team is on its way to the site.

RACQ CQ Rescue air crewman Quinton Rethus said there was good visibility for searchers.

"Fortunately the weather is clearer today than it has been for the past week, which has made visibility from the helicopter quite good," he said.
